May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Hello everyone! Hope you all are having a great week!! May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health is something that we want to make sure that we are taking care of. Sometimes we forget that our mental health is just as important as our physical heatlh There is such a stigma around mental health and mental health treatment, but I am here to tell you that you are not alone, many people deal with something every day and that's okay. It's okay not to be okay some days.

In order for us to be able to smash this stigma, there are a couple of things that we can do. One of the first things is that we can become involved in organizations that help combat stigma and bringing awareness to mental health and treatment. This includes attending events, volunteering at the organization or donating time, money, or services. These can be national organizations like National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), the Trevor Project, or the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. They can also be local organization like in Pittsburgh we have places like Steel Smiling, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR). This list is not exhaustive but just a few examples of places.

Another thing we can do is sharing our own stories. In order to break the stigma, we have to talk about mental health more and spread that awareness. Thes two things are just a couple of examples and there are so many more things that can be done. Maybe in the next couple of weeks, I can write more about these things that can be done.

I want to leave you with this. If you are struggling or need to talk, please reach out to someone. This can be a friend, a family member, or even a hotline. I can be a resource as well. But it very important to reach out to talk. This is the number to the National Suicide Hotline (800-273-8255).

For the rest of the month, I will be discussing more about mental health. Unite then you can find me on all social media platforms
